Over nine years ago, as a baseball-obsessed senior in high school, I applied to be an unpaid staff writer for a small sports website covering the D-Backs. I had time to kill after getting injured early in my senior season of baseball, and I needed something extra to keep me connected to the game as all signs pointed toward the end of my playing days.
I had a lot of fun with that role through the 2016 season and decided to create my own "site" called Sunrise Short Hops right away in college with one of my best friends, Chauncy Voorhies. We recruited friends and students from the Sports Business Association club on campus to give them an opportunity to write and add something sports-related to their resumes. It was a great experience working with friends and their sports passions as well as recruiting students and building new connections.
As we turned 21 and began to narrow down our post-graduation paths, we posted less and less. Eventually, we were offered a deal to sell our domain for more than we had purchased it for a few years prior (which we considered a win to get some money back).
Now, over five years removed from working in the sports industry and graduating college, I’ve found a few true passions in sports that I enjoy spending my spare time on: golf, tennis, and vintage apparel shopping. One thing I have definitely missed, though, is writing.
I want Thoughts and Threads Clubhouse to bring me back to researching, reflecting, and writing. I envision T&T embodying the theme of having a cold beer and a great time with your buddies after 18 holes or three sets in a clubhouse. Lastly, I aim to create a marketplace to showcase and sell the vintage sports gear I’ve thrifted over the past few years.
For everyone who knows me, there’s going to be plenty of writing focused on the D-Backs, Red Sox, Suns, Arizona State, and golf. Some things have changed though, and I’ve caught the tennis playing and watching bug, inspired by my mom forcing me to play family pickleball and then witnessing Nick Kyrgios’ incredible run at Wimbledon in 2022. I might even take a page from Chauncy’s book and write about MLS soccer, as I’m now an inaugural season ticket holder of the newest major sports team in San Diego.
Thanks for reading and maybe even subscribing. Up next this week, you can expect my first topics to be my post-Wimbledon thoughts as two of my favorite players had heartbreaking exits. I will also as give my take on the D-Backs and Red Sox trade deadline status as the league gets some time off during All Star Week. Lastly, maybe the greatest event in sports begins late on Wednesday night on the west coast with The Open Championship at Royal Portrush. While many call this the most boring time of year in sports, I still find a way to be captivated.
I’m very much looking forward to nerding out and writing about sports again while documenting my thoughts, feelings, and style all at once.
